Best time to visit Marrakech: a seasonal planner

For most travellers, spring and autumn are the easiest seasons in Marrakech. Days are generally better suited to long walks, and evenings are comfortable with a light layer.

That answer changes with the trip. Summer can work if you start early, rest through the hottest part of the day and keep outdoor plans for evening. Winter is good for city sightseeing, but desert and mountain nights can be cold. The Moroccan National Tourist Office also recommends spring and autumn for trips into the Sahara.

Weather is never a fixed timetable. Use this as a planning framework, then check the forecast and any mountain road notices close to departure.

March to May

Spring suits travellers who want to combine the medina with the Atlas, Agafay or Ouzoud. Plan the most demanding city walks in the morning, then keep a slower lunch and one focused afternoon visit.

The season can bring rain, and conditions in the mountains are not the same as in Marrakech. A sunny city morning does not guarantee a dry trail. Pack a light waterproof layer and shoes that can handle damp stone.

This is a sensible period for an Ourika Valley and Atlas Mountains trip or the longer Ouzoud Waterfalls day trip. Ouzoud is a full road day, so do not schedule an early paid attraction the following morning.

Spring is popular. Reserve timed attractions in advance and leave slack between bookings. Medina navigation usually takes longer than the map suggests.

June to August

Summer requires a different daily rhythm. Treat the early morning and evening as your main outdoor windows. Use the middle of the day for lunch, a riad break, a museum or a hammam.

A workable city day looks like this:

• Start a medina walk soon after breakfast.
• Visit one ticketed site rather than racing between several.
• Return indoors before the hottest part of the afternoon.
• Go back out for the souks and Jemaa el-Fna later in the day.

Do not assume the mountains are automatically cool. The Atlas can be cooler than the city, but exposed walks still need water, sun protection and an honest assessment of fitness.

Agafay is better planned for late afternoon and evening in summer. The Agafay camel, quad and dinner experience avoids turning the exposed midday landscape into the main event.

September to November

Autumn is the other strong all-round period. Early autumn can still be hot, so do not assume that the calendar changes the temperature overnight. By later in the season, longer walks and outdoor lunches are usually easier to plan.

This is a good window for travellers splitting time between Marrakech and the south. The Moroccan National Tourist Office recommends autumn for Saharan travel. A proper Merzouga route still needs three days from Marrakech, regardless of the weather. Compare Agafay, Zagora and Merzouga before booking.

Daylight becomes shorter later in the season. A long excursion may return after dark, and an Agafay dinner will feel colder once the sun drops. Carry a layer in the vehicle.

December to February

Winter can be an excellent time to walk in Marrakech during the day. The trap is packing for the afternoon only. Riads, early mornings, Agafay evenings and mountain stops can all feel much colder than expected.

Bring layers that work together. One bulky coat is less useful than a light base layer, sweater and weather-resistant outer layer that can be removed as the day warms.

Mountain plans need more flexibility in winter. Snow, rain and road conditions can affect High Atlas routes. A reputable operator should be willing to change the plan when conditions require it.

For travellers staying in the city, winter works well for the medina, Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Madrasa and Jardin Majorelle. Book only through official channels where they exist.

Attraction planning

Opening hours and ticket rules are unstable facts, so this section is date-stamped. The details below were checked on 26 July 2026:

• Jardin Majorelle listed daily opening from 8:30 to 18:00, with last admission at 17:30. Its official site says tickets are sold online through its own ticket portal.
• Ben Youssef Madrasa listed normal daily hours of 9:00 to 19:00 and shorter Ramadan hours of 9:00 to 16:30.
• The Moroccan Ministry of Culture ticket portal listed Bahia Palace visiting hours of 9:00 to 17:00.

Check the linked official sources again before travel. Special events, restoration and religious holidays can change access.

Ramadan and public holidays

Ramadan moves earlier each Gregorian year. Some attractions shorten their hours, and restaurant schedules outside tourist areas may shift. The city remains visitable, but a tightly timed itinerary is less forgiving.

Confirm each attraction on its official website and ask your accommodation about local meal and transport patterns for your dates. During religious and national holidays, government-run sites may use special access rules.

Matching the season to an excursion

Choose by conditions and trip length:

• Agafay: easy to fit year-round, with evening timing preferable in hot weather and warm layers needed in winter.
• Ourika or Imlil: best with a current weather and road check, especially in winter.
• Ouzoud: a long day in every season; footwear matters after rain.
• Essaouira: useful in summer, but carry a layer for Atlantic wind.
• Zagora or Merzouga: spring and autumn are the easiest broad windows, though each departure still needs a forecast check.

The short recommendation

Choose March to May or late September to November if you want the simplest combination of city walking and excursions. Choose winter for cooler daytime sightseeing and fewer plans that depend on mountain access. Choose summer only if you are happy to rebuild the day around heat.

Whichever month you choose, leave one flexible half-day. Marrakech rewards wandering, and weather or a closed site is much less frustrating when the schedule has room to move.
