Marrakech Desert Tours: Agafay, Zagora or Merzouga?
A clear comparison of Agafay, Zagora and Merzouga by terrain, road time and trip length, with no claim that Agafay is the Sahara.

Marrakech desert tours: Agafay, Zagora or Merzouga?
The three names appear beside the same search term, but they describe very different trips.
Agafay is a rocky desert landscape outside Marrakech. Zagora is a southern town used as a base for desert routes near the Draa Valley. Merzouga sits beside Erg Chebbi, the large dune field most travellers picture when they say "the Sahara."
The decision comes down to time. An evening, two days and three days do not buy different versions of one excursion. They buy different places.
The comparison at a glance
- Agafay: A half-day or evening is sensible. The terrain is rocky and dry, and the main compromise is that there are no large sand dunes.
- Zagora route: Plan for two days and one night. The route crosses Draa Valley landscapes and reaches smaller dune areas, but it packs substantial road time into a short trip.
- Merzouga and Erg Chebbi: Plan for three days and two nights. This is the choice for large Saharan sand dunes, but it requires three days away from Marrakech.
Road conditions, stops and the exact camp location affect journey time. Ask for the daily route, not just a headline number of hours.
Agafay is close, rocky and useful
The Moroccan National Tourist Office describes Agafay as a landscape of rocky dunes near Marrakech. That is the honest starting point. You can ride a camel, take a quad excursion, eat dinner at a camp and watch the light change across the hills. You will not see Erg Chebbi-style sand dunes.
Agafay is the right choice when you have one spare afternoon, do not want to repack, or are travelling with someone who would struggle with long transfers. It also fits a city break without sacrificing a full day in the medina.
For a combined outing, see the Agafay camel, quad and dinner experience. Travellers who want the quieter activity can choose the Agafay camel ride. Use the live pages for current timing, price and inclusions.
Agafay can be cold after dark in winter and exposed in summer. Pack for the return journey, not only the warm afternoon.
Zagora is a short southern circuit
Zagora is not a single dune field. The wider region includes the Draa Valley, palm groves, rocky terrain and dune sites such as Tinfou, Erg Lihoudi and Chegaga. The exact route matters, because camps marketed as "Zagora desert" do not all sit in the same place.
A two-day tour from Marrakech is compressed. Day one crosses the High Atlas and continues south. Day two returns. That leaves limited time outside the vehicle, but it can work when two days are all you have and you want to see the Draa region rather than stay near Marrakech.
Before booking, ask:
- Where is the overnight camp?
- How long is each day's drive?
- Is the camel segment transport to camp or a separate ride?
- Which meals and entrance fees are included?
- Is luggage kept in the vehicle or taken to camp?
The MTS Tours option is the two-day Zagora desert route. Its live listing is the place to confirm the current itinerary.
Merzouga is the route for Erg Chebbi
The Moroccan National Tourist Office places Merzouga at Erg Chebbi and describes the area as dunes, palm groves, tracks and hikes. If the trip depends on seeing a large sand erg, this is the clearest fit.
Three days is the standard minimum from Marrakech because the route covers a large distance and crosses the Atlas. Even then, expect two substantial driving days. The middle of the itinerary should make room for the landscape rather than adding every possible roadside stop.
A sensible three-day outline is:
- Marrakech to the Dades or Tinghir area, with planned stops on the way.
- Continue towards Merzouga, reach the dune area and stay overnight.
- Return to Marrakech, usually by a long route through the south and across the Atlas.
Some itineraries reverse stops or use a different overnight town. That is fine. What matters is whether the operator states the route clearly.
See the live three-day Merzouga tour for MTS Tours availability and inclusions.
Agafay versus Merzouga
This is the comparison that causes the most disappointment, so keep it simple:
- Choose Agafay for proximity, an evening camp and a short activity.
- Choose Merzouga for Erg Chebbi and large sand dunes.
- Do not describe Agafay as the Sahara.
- Do not attempt Merzouga as a day trip from Marrakech.
The experience at camp also differs. Agafay camps are close enough to the city to operate as dinner venues. A Merzouga camp is part of a long-distance route and needs a plan for luggage, meals, desert transfers and the next morning's departure.
Zagora versus Merzouga
Choose Zagora when only two days are available and the Draa route itself interests you. Choose Merzouga when the dunes are the reason for going and you can give the trip three days.
Neither option is "no driving." If a two-day Zagora tour is being sold as a relaxed Sahara break, read the daily schedule carefully. If a three-day Merzouga tour promises many long visits on both transfer days, check how those visits fit around the road time.
Season and packing
The Moroccan National Tourist Office recommends spring and autumn for the Sahara. That does not mean every day is mild. Desert temperatures change sharply between sun and shade, and between afternoon and night.
Bring:
- a small overnight bag rather than a large hard suitcase
- closed shoes for rough ground
- sun protection and water
- a warm layer for camp, especially outside summer
- any essential medication in your day bag
- cash for items not listed as included
In summer, heat can change activity times. In winter, snow or bad weather in the Atlas can affect the road. Ask the operator about conditions shortly before departure.
Booking without surprises
Read the live activity page and request the route in writing. Confirm the number of nights, type of room or tent, bathroom arrangement, meals, pickup point and whether the trip returns to Marrakech or can finish elsewhere.
Prices are intentionally not reproduced here because they change with date, group type and availability. The activity pages above are the current booking source.
